The Faculty of Arts Students Association's (FASA) Manifesto and Debate Night, held on 21 June 2024, was a well-attended event that set the stage for FASA's upcoming elections. With the majority of the executive posts unopposed, the highlight of the event was the highly competitive positions for Assistant General Secretary, Vice President, and President. FACULTY OF ARTS STUDENT ASSOCIATION PROPOSES ELECTRONIC VOTING TO ENSURE FAIRNESS

The Faculty of Arts Students Association (FASA) held its first press conference today under the leadership of the Electoral Commission Chairman, Oluwamayowa Isaac Alabi, known as LordMayor. The conference, held at HB 3, Room 404, experienced a low turnout of attendees. The purpose of the conference was to ensure a fair, transparent, and credible FASA election, scheduled for June 24th, 2024, at AUD II from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. The electoral commission introduced a new electronic voting system, replacing the traditional paper-based voting. Electoral Chairman Alabi, along with General Secretary Abidemi, provided an orientation on the new voting process. NIGERIAN SINGER, JIBROMAH, AIMS TO BREAK THE CURRENT RECORD FOR LONGEST SINGING PERFORMANCE AT 105 HOURS

  Blessing Jibromah, a Nigerian singer has announced her intention to break the current Guinness World Record (GWR) at 105 hours of singing.  She made this known while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview on Thursday,13th June, 2024. According to her, the purpose of her attempt to break this world record is not only to engrave her name in the history of music but to inspire Nigerian singers and performers to dream big. "I am thrilled to announce my desire to break the GWR for the longest singing marathon (Sing-A-Thon) . "I am not driven just by the challenge itself but by the potential benefits it can bring to Nigerians," She stated. Jibromah is attempting to set a new record of 144 hours of singing which is approximately 39 hours above the current record which is held by an Indian singer, Sunil Waghmare. The 144-hour sing- a- thon is scheduled for July 27 to August 2 at Unique Park Gardens, Sky memorial, Zone 5, Abuja.

GUNMEN ATTACK SOKOTO VILLAGE, ABDUCT MANY ON SALLAH DAY

  Armed men suspected to be terrorist killed six people and abducted many others at a village in Gwadabawa Local Government area of Sokoto state. Ahmed Rufia, the public relations officer of the police command in Sokoto confirmed the attack that the gunmen stormed Tudun Doki village at about 1:30am on SALLAH DAY. He said, "six bodies have been retrieved so far, but the police are yet to ascertain the number of abducted persons." The gangs who maintain camps in a huge forest straddling Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and Niger states, have also undertaken large-scale kidnapping of pupils from schools in recent years. They carry out mass abductions for ransom as well as burning and looting homes. Last month, the gangs raided four villages in Katsina state's, Sabuwa district, killing 25 people, mostly local vigilantes, in apparent reprisals over military offensive on their hideouts, according to a local official.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has sympathised with President Bola Tinubu after the President slipped at the 2024 Democracy Day celebration that held at the Eagles Square. This happened while boarding the parade vehicle at the venue. Atiku, in a post on X, wrote, “I sincerely sympathise with President Bola Tinubu, @officialABAT, over this unfortunate incident as he was set to review the parade on Democracy Day. I do hope that all is well with him." -AA. It was reported that the President missed a step and lost his balance for a while as he was about to step into the vehicle. He, however, regained his balance and continued with the proceedings.

INFLATION SURGED TO 33.95% IN MAY, SAYS NBS

According to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria’s inflation rate increased to 33.95 per cent for the month of May 2024. This represents a month-over-month increase of 0.26 per cent points in the headline inflation rate from 33.69 per cent recorded in April, the NBS stated in the Consumer Price Index report released on Saturday. The report added that the inflation rate ascended to a more than 28-year high in May on higher food and transport prices. Furthermore, potatoes, fish, and meat contributed to higher food prices. Food inflation quickened to 40.66 per cent in May from 40.3 per cent in April. “The Food inflation rate in May 2024, was 40.66 per cent on a year-on-year basis, which was 15.84 per cent points higher compared to the rate recorded in May 2023 (24.82 percent),” the NBS report read.
