The Faculty of Arts Students Association (FASA) held its first press conference today under the leadership of the Electoral Commission Chairman, Oluwamayowa Isaac Alabi, known as LordMayor. The conference, held at HB 3, Room 404, experienced a low turnout of attendees. The purpose of the conference was to ensure a fair, transparent, and credible FASA election, scheduled for June 24th, 2024, at AUD II from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. The electoral commission introduced a new electronic voting system, replacing the traditional paper-based voting.
Electoral Chairman Alabi, along with General Secretary Abidemi, provided an orientation on the new voting process. LordMayor explained that the change was made to maintain orderliness, transparency, and fairness during the election. Voters will still need to be accredited at the voting venue but will vote electronically, using provided email and password. The chairman emphasized that multiple demo elections have been conducted to test the feasibility of the new system and that more demonstrations will be held at the upcoming Debate and Manifesto Night on June 21st, at AUD II, 3 pm for the benefit of the association.
Upon request, the chairman affirmed that election results will be released after the election.
The innovative voting system sparked debate among FASA members, but Chairman Alabi urged them to attend the Debate and Manifesto Night for a demo trial. He assured the association that they would experience "the best, most free election in the history of the faculty of Arts."
The chairman also emphasized the importance of maintaining press security and respecting journalists throughout the election process as plans have been put in place to ensure this.
Overall, the conference was a step towards ensuring that the FASA election would be conducted fairly and transparently, with new technology introduced to improve the voting process. The association will continue to work towards a free and democratic election.
