PROFESSOR SONIBARE CALLS FOR RENEWED FOCUS ON AIR POLLUTION AND HEALTH IN INAUGURAL LECTURE

Professor Sonibare Ademola Jacob of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University gave an insightful inaugural lecture on February 13th, 2024. The lecture, held at Oduduwa Hall, focused on the importance of air pollution control and its implications for health management. The professor, during his lecture, said “I intend to do this by presenting the reality of air pollution around us for as long as raw materials are converted to products we desire daily. It is my intention to use this lecture to present what I know about air pollution as a scientist and to demonstrate the possibility of some air pollution problems as I have done with my engineering training and practice. FASA FRESHMAN FIESTA: VIBRANT NIGHT, FIERCE PAGEANTRY, AND UNFORGETTABLE GROOVES

The Faculty of Arts Students’ Association (FASA) organised a vibrant fresher’s bash on Saturday, February 10th, at Ifeloju Event Center. The energy was electric as hundreds of FASA members, both stalites and fresh students, poured through the doors at 9 pm. Despite a brief hiccup with ticket checks, the party quickly pulsated with music and good vibes, even spilling outside the packed hall. Dignitaries like FASA President “D’Gov ” and NASELS President Jahz Baba graced the event, while MC Dammycares kept the program lively. Musical talents Pherami Geerapstar and Anjola set the stage alight with their contrasting styles, before 16 dazzling contestants took centre stage for the highly anticipated pageantry. In every event (by events I mean seminars, conferences, colloquiums etc. ) there is usually a couple of speakers or more. These speakers are often introduced by another person before they actually come upstage to talk. Have you ever wondered why do we have to go through the stress of having someone introduce a speaker? The goal of an introductory speech is to : Get us acquainted with a speaker. Present the speaker’s credentials and its significance to the topic. Arouse the curiosity of the audience. Make the speaker feel welcome. Since the majority of what an introductory speech primarily focuses on is the speaker, that suggests to you that a proper and adequate knowledge of the speaker is imperative. A BITTER-SWEET NIGHT AS THE AMPHITHEATRE HOSTS AFCON FINAL

Last night was everything from excitement to disappointment at the Amphitheatre. The AFCON final was live streamed at Afrika Amphitheatre yesterday night as Students gathered around to support Nigeria. The event was sponsored by the Student Union’s Director of Socials and Culture, Moses Oyebamiji “Coweb” and Markay, a brand influencer. The stage was set as early as 7 pm and the students were more than one thousand at the venue by the time. Santos and Dblaq emceed the event which, no doubt, was a turn of entertainment. This was amidst music before the match. The Afrika Amphitheatre was already occupied 30 minutes before the match and students had to sit on the floor and podium which showed their passion for the football team. A large number of the spectators were clothed with green-white-green body paintings and some on their faces. AMIDST DISAGREEMENT AND DISRUPTION AT CONGRESS, FASA ENFORCES THE DEADLINE FOR DUE PAYMENT

The 2nd FASA Congress meeting buzzed with activity at AUD II on February 7th. King Feet kicked off the event at 3:15 pm, ushering in President Ahmed Oluwasina. After the University anthem, Charles Oluwadamilare swiftly moved to adopt the agenda, followed by the reading of the previous meeting’s minutes by the Assistant General Secretary. President Oluwasina highlighted recent faculty activities, including football matches, a freshmen sports fiesta, a trip to Fuoye, and a well-received freshers’ week. COMMOTION ENSUES AS ENGLISH FRESHMEN SUFFERED THEIR FIRST DEFEAT

The English Freshmen football team led by their captain Oluwatomisin (Omega) suffered their first defeat in a dramatic match against the Material Science and Engineering Freshman football team today at Training Pitch 2. The match kicked off at 4 PM. The Material Science and Engineering Freshmen dominated the first few minutes of the game. However, they couldn’t prevent the English Striking Maestro, Moses, from putting the first goal at the back of the net in the early minutes of the game, after an amazing pass from the right winger, Future. The English Goal Machine, Moses has now scored 11 goals in 5 matches for the team. It didn’t take long for the Material Science and Engineering team to respond, after an error leading to a goal by the English Freshmen goalkeeper, Bosun. The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) campus came alive on Monday, 5th February, 2024 with an electrifying open concert organized by FOJ, a first-year Music Department student. The Student Union area pulsed with vibrant energy as the event drew a crowd of enthusiastic students, passersby, and supporters. Some important personalities were in attendance, which include the president of the Student Union, LordFem, the former vice president of the Student Union, Salvation Grace, the financial secretary of the Student Union, and sensational comedian Biyi Praise graced the event. The Great IFE Students’ Union held its first congress since resumption on February 5th, 2024, at the Afrika Amphitheatre. The event was scheduled to begin at 3pm, but started at 3:36pm. The congress experienced a low turnout of students. Recall that the Union held 3 congresses during the holiday to tackle the fee increment by the management. The Congresses which had constitution of The Great Ife Students’ Union school fees review committee. The committee was however disolved after submission from Congress men and women that the committee had served it purpose and they should be relieved on their duty. President Abass Akinremi Ojo (LoRdFeM) delivered the opening address and highlighted the Union’s achievements since taking office. NASELS HOLDS FIRST CONGRESS UNDER NEW ADMINISTRATION

The Nasels Students Association held its first congress on January 31st, 2024, since the new administration resumed its duties. The congress was scheduled to start at 4:00 PM, however, it started behind the time – 4:10 pm. During the congress, several issues were raised by members of the association. It included fresh students who had not yet received their souvenirs, the fresh students’ party, and other concerns. The key point of contention was the formation of the Academic Committee and Judiciary members. Olaniran Solomon (Hon Solo Pee) brought to the notice of the president: the nomination of these committees at the first congress meeting, as stated in the association’s constitution. The president’s response as regards the nominations did not satisfy all members present.
