A BITTER-SWEET NIGHT AS THE AMPHITHEATRE HOSTS AFCON FINAL

Last night was everything from excitement to disappointment at the Amphitheatre. The AFCON final was live streamed at Afrika Amphitheatre yesterday night as Students gathered around to support Nigeria.

AMPHITHEATRE

The event was sponsored by the Student Union’s Director of Socials and Culture, Moses Oyebamiji “Coweb” and Markay, a brand influencer. The stage was set as early as 7 pm and the students were more than one thousand at the venue by the time. Santos and Dblaq emceed the event which, no doubt, was a turn of entertainment. This was amidst music before the match.

The Afrika Amphitheatre was already occupied 30 minutes before the match and students had to sit on the floor and podium which showed their passion for the football team. A large number of the spectators were clothed with green-white-green body paintings and some on their faces.

Different giveaways were done before and during the match by different clothing brands and food brands.

There was a bit of frustration when the match started and the DSTV signal was down. The problem was resolved and the match started streaming 6 minutes after the match started. The Students showed so much passion as they clapped and shouted for every attempt the Super Eagles got. The Nigeria Goalkeeper, Nwabali seems to be everyone’s favourite as they shout and clap anytime he saves a shot. There was a roar as the Super Eagles Captain netted the first goal in the 38th minute of the game. The DJ played music and everyone danced and shouted each time the goal was replayed. The live stream didn’t go smoothly as the network at the venue was bad.

A student pranked the Nigerian striking talisman, Osimhen scored the second goal. This led to another roar but the students were disappointed to find that it was a prank. During the half-time break, the atmosphere remained elated. The Amphitheatre roaring and chanting was shut 17 minutes into the second half as the Ivory Coast team equalised. The live stream was interrupted again due to the fluctuating network.

From Joy to gloominess, the atmosphere changed as a student announced that the Elephants had overtaken the lead. Some students started to leave the Amphitheater after the goal while most waited in the hope that the table would turn and the Eagles would equalise but that only remained a hope as the Super Eagles failed to equalise and lost the match. This led to a massive evacuation of the Students from the Amphitheatre as some left in silence and some in murmur. The DJ couldn’t continue the music as the night that was expected to be a party was turned into a sad one. The students staying off campus were told to stay on campus overnight as it was already too late to leave the campus after the match.

"I WOULD HATE TO MAKE PROMISES BECAUSE THEN I WOULD BE CHALLENGED TO PERFORM ABOVE THEM." - FRANCIS OHACHO, PRESIDENT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, OAU.

By Mercy Ojegbola  NCB: Can we meet you? Francis: I am Francis Fortunatus Ohacho, popularly known as Sael. A part four student in the Department of English, Obafemi Awolowo University, I am the incumbent president of the department's students body. NCB: What motivated you to run for the position of President? Francis: I would like to use cliché pumped up phrases like I'm led by my passion for service and all.  People often say they knew I was going for presidency from part one due to my proactiveness, but really I didn't have the Presidency in mind till late second semester of part two.  And that's because I have only wanted to support from the sides, being a significant catalyst for development wherever I am. So I've had roles like Vice President and Fin Sec in mind, but not president. I didn't think I had it. My motivation, in summary, would be the realisation of how efficient I can be to an administration. And I don't doubt it, that with the help of the t...
