PROFESSOR SONIBARE CALLS FOR RENEWED FOCUS ON AIR POLLUTION AND HEALTH IN INAUGURAL LECTURE

Professor Sonibare Ademola Jacob of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University gave an insightful inaugural lecture on February 13th, 2024. The lecture, held at Oduduwa Hall, focused on the importance of air pollution control and its implications for health management.

INAUGURAL LECTURE

The professor, during his lecture, said “I intend to do this by presenting the reality of air pollution around us for as long as raw materials are converted to products we desire daily. It is my intention to use this lecture to present what I know about air pollution as a scientist and to demonstrate the possibility of some air pollution problems as I have done with my engineering training and practice. I think this will convince the upcoming researchers that there is the need for an improved strategy on the management of our air shed.”

The professor stressed the need for researchers to adopt an improved strategy for air pollution management. He highlighted his own engineering training and practice as a foundation for this research, and called for a renewed focus on the relationship between air pollution and health.

The lecture was well-received by attendees, who appreciated Professor Sonibare’s effort to bring this issue to light. Many were inspired to further explore the topic and consider how they might contribute to the improvement of air pollution management. This inaugural lecture is sure to spark further research and discussion on the important topic of air pollution and its impact on our health.

Professor Sonibare emphasised the importance of promoting environmental education in developing countries, highlighting the need for corporations to prioritise sustainable development. The professor dedicated his lecture to all primary school teachers in Nigeria, who work tirelessly to educate and inspire the next generation. He expressed his gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, dignitaries, family, colleagues, and students for their support and participation in the lecture. This inaugural lecture was a powerful reminder of the importance of environmental education and sustainable development, and will hopefully inspire further action on these important issues.
