ACJOAU HOLDS INTER-NEWS AGENCY ORATORY CONTEST

By Olaoye Oluwapelumi

The third edition of the ACJOAU Inter-News Agency Oratory Contest happened on April 25th, 2026. The event which held at EDB 317 began with an opening prayer led by the Editor-in-chief for OAU Kilonsele. This was immediately followed by the rendition of the school's anthem.

Thereafter, Esther Olatimehin, the President of ACJOAU, delivered an opening speech where she talked about the birth of the oratory contest and introduced the distinguished panel of judges.

The panel featured Coach Ajake, the president of the OAU debate team, and Isaiah Adepoju, the author of Happiness is a Sickle Kinikan in my Belly. Nine news agencies participated in the contest including the ICONS Organisation, ASPOB Conglomerate, InFocus News Agency, KOWEE News Agency, NAPSS OAU Press Team, NASELS Communication Bureau, Great Ife Network, OAU Kilonsele, and OAU PEEPS. Each organisation was represented by two members.

Modalities were already set for the contest but it was unexpectedly reshaped by the chief judge, Coach Ajake. He introduced a sudden twist, building a tense atmosphere for the contestants. Coach Ajake moved the impromptu speech round which was supposed to come after the initial round themed: _‘The Agenda-Setting Power of the Media: How Far Does it Shape Public Perception?’_ to the beginning. He did this to test the participants’ mental prowess and increase the tension level.

The speaking rounds officially began with a representative from each news agency. Each person had three minutes to prepare and present their points.

The first round ended with the ASPOB Conglomerate, Great Ife Network, KOWEE News Agency, and OAU Peeps stepping down from the contest, while the ICONS Organisation, InFocus News Agency, NAPSS OAU Press Team, NASELS Communication Bureau, and OAU Kilonsele, contesting against one another. Before the next round began, the judges provided critical observations and advice for the participants.

The next round was intense as every contestant presented their ideas on the contest’s theme. After the presentation, the results were announced with the ICONS Organisation emerging as the winner with an overall score of 67.5. This was followed by the InFocus News Agency at 65.25, NAPSS OAU at 64.3, NASELS Communication Bureau at 61.25, and OAU Kilonsele at 59.3.

Overall, the contest was intense, challenging the minds of the participants to think. It also served as a vehicle to bond members across news agencies and improve communication among campus journalists.

"IF I COULD GO BACK IN TIME, I WOULD PROBABLY NOT BE IN OAU" - 2025 BEST GRADUATING STUDENT, ENGLISH DEPARTMENT, OAU

NCB: Good evening. Nice to have you here. How do you do? Afeez:Good evening. I'm good. You? NCB: I am very well. Thank God Can you introduce yourself? Tell us about your background. Afeez: My name is Olagbaju Afeez Olatomide. I'm from a muslim family of 6. I have three siblings and we are all boys. NCB: How about your educational background? Afeez: I spent all my educational life up to this moment in Ife. I attended Pearl Preparatory School while in nursery class. I proceeded to Faith Standard Schools for my primary and secondary education. I finished secondary school in 2019, applied for English language here in OAU the same year and I got admitted a few months after. NCB: So you mean to type that English was your first choice. Afeez: Yes. I chose English myself. Actually, when I was in SSS 3, I was indecisive on whether I should pursue a degree in Law or English. Later, I got to find out Law wasn't accredited as a programme in OAU that year and since a passionate love fo...

"I WOULD HATE TO MAKE PROMISES BECAUSE THEN I WOULD BE CHALLENGED TO PERFORM ABOVE THEM." - FRANCIS OHACHO, PRESIDENT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, OAU.

By Mercy Ojegbola  NCB: Can we meet you? Francis: I am Francis Fortunatus Ohacho, popularly known as Sael. A part four student in the Department of English, Obafemi Awolowo University, I am the incumbent president of the department's students body. NCB: What motivated you to run for the position of President? Francis: I would like to use cliché pumped up phrases like I'm led by my passion for service and all.  People often say they knew I was going for presidency from part one due to my proactiveness, but really I didn't have the Presidency in mind till late second semester of part two.  And that's because I have only wanted to support from the sides, being a significant catalyst for development wherever I am. So I've had roles like Vice President and Fin Sec in mind, but not president. I didn't think I had it. My motivation, in summary, would be the realisation of how efficient I can be to an administration. And I don't doubt it, that with the help of the t...

NCB: Your team tag, "Lumora," is quite intriguing. What does it mean, and how does it capture the goals and vision of the administration ?? Amos: The name Lumora is actually coined from the idea of light, and it symbolizes a futuristic and purposeful era, one that aligns perfectly with the vision of the Aurora Agenda. The concept of light represents clarity, direction, and renewal, which are the guiding principles of this administration. We see ourselves as bearers of light, bringing illumination to grey areas within the faculty and driving a sense of progress and unity among students. So, Team Lumora is not just a name. It is a reflection of our commitment to lead with vision, purpose, and positive transformation. NC...
