HOW PROPER USE OF DEODORANTS BOOSTS CONFIDENCE AND SOCIAL INTERACTION

By Mercy Olabiyi

Personal hygiene is an important aspect of everyday life, influencing not only physical well-being but also self-confidence and social relationships. Among the many personal care products available today, deodorants have become a common item used by people to maintain freshness and reduce body odour.

Body odour can sometimes create discomfort and self-consciousness, especially in social settings such as classrooms, workplaces, religious gatherings, and public events. For many individuals, the fear of emitting an unpleasant smell can affect their confidence and willingness to interact with others. This is where deodorants play a significant role.

Deodorants are designed to reduce or mask body odour caused by bacteria that break down sweat on the skin. Their use helps individuals feel cleaner and more comfortable throughout the day, particularly in hot climates where excessive sweating is common.

According to dermatologist Paul A. Regan, deodorants work by making the skin less attractive to odour-causing bacteria. While they do not prevent sweating, they help control unpleasant smells, allowing users to remain fresh and comfortable for longer periods.

The psychological benefits of using deodorants are equally significant. People who feel fresh and well-groomed often display greater self-assurance when communicating with others. Confidence can positively influence social interactions, helping individuals participate more freely in conversations, group activities, and professional engagements.

For students, deodorants can contribute to a more pleasant learning environment by reducing concerns about body odour during lectures and social activities. Similarly, professionals may find that maintaining personal freshness enhances their confidence during meetings, presentations, and interactions with colleagues or clients.

However, experts emphasize that deodorants should complement good hygiene practices rather than replace them. Regular bathing, clean clothing, and proper grooming remain essential for maintaining overall cleanliness and health. Users are also advised to select products that suit their skin type to avoid irritation or allergic reactions.

As awareness of personal grooming continues to increase, the proper use of deodorants remains a simple yet effective way of promoting confidence, improving self-image, and encouraging positive social interactions. In a society where first impressions often matter, staying fresh can make a meaningful difference in how individuals perceive themselves and how they relate to others.

"I WOULD HATE TO MAKE PROMISES BECAUSE THEN I WOULD BE CHALLENGED TO PERFORM ABOVE THEM." - FRANCIS OHACHO, PRESIDENT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, OAU.

By Mercy Ojegbola  NCB: Can we meet you? Francis: I am Francis Fortunatus Ohacho, popularly known as Sael. A part four student in the Department of English, Obafemi Awolowo University, I am the incumbent president of the department's students body. NCB: What motivated you to run for the position of President? Francis: I would like to use cliché pumped up phrases like I'm led by my passion for service and all.  People often say they knew I was going for presidency from part one due to my proactiveness, but really I didn't have the Presidency in mind till late second semester of part two.  And that's because I have only wanted to support from the sides, being a significant catalyst for development wherever I am. So I've had roles like Vice President and Fin Sec in mind, but not president. I didn't think I had it. My motivation, in summary, would be the realisation of how efficient I can be to an administration. And I don't doubt it, that with the help of the t...
