POOR CONDITION OF WATER IN OAU HALLS OF RESIDENCE

By Comfort Oladapo

Students residing on campus in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have expressed their concerns over the poor water condition supplied from the dam that serves all hostels on campus.

The water is often dirty, unsafe for drinking, unfit for cooking, and, in several cases, not even suitable for bathing.

The state of the water has worsened in recent weeks. Residents claim the water frequently appears brownish, contains particles, and has a foul smell that results in skin irritation such as rashes, eczema, ringworm, etc. Students in most cases are left with no option other than to make use of the water because of the unavailability of borehole water.

A resident of Moremi Hall who chose to remain anonymous described the situation as “unbearable", "the water that comes out of the tap is not clean at all. We can’t use it to cook and even bathe with it because it causes skin irritation for some people,” she said.

A resident of Fajuyi Hall said: “The state of the water kind of depends, it might be clean now, and in like five to thirty minutes' time, it back to being dirty (colorful). The water is not stable.”

Damola Ojebola, a resident of Alumni Hall, stated her plight: “The dam water in our hostel is terribly unclean, leading to rashes for many of us. It's simply not safe.”

She expressed her grievances “Last session, there was no borehole water, I was forced to use the dam water for bathing. It caused persistent rashes on my body that lasted for months. This water is simply unsafe, and the reality that I have to stay there again this session is already a torment for me."

Students are hereby urging the school management to look into the issue and create a long-lasting solution to the state of the water to make it clean and usable for the students.

"I WOULD HATE TO MAKE PROMISES BECAUSE THEN I WOULD BE CHALLENGED TO PERFORM ABOVE THEM." - FRANCIS OHACHO, PRESIDENT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, OAU.

By Mercy Ojegbola  NCB: Can we meet you? Francis: I am Francis Fortunatus Ohacho, popularly known as Sael. A part four student in the Department of English, Obafemi Awolowo University, I am the incumbent president of the department's students body. NCB: What motivated you to run for the position of President? Francis: I would like to use cliché pumped up phrases like I'm led by my passion for service and all.  People often say they knew I was going for presidency from part one due to my proactiveness, but really I didn't have the Presidency in mind till late second semester of part two.  And that's because I have only wanted to support from the sides, being a significant catalyst for development wherever I am. So I've had roles like Vice President and Fin Sec in mind, but not president. I didn't think I had it. My motivation, in summary, would be the realisation of how efficient I can be to an administration. And I don't doubt it, that with the help of the t...
