THE YINKA ODUMAKIN PUBLIC LECTURE AND INTER-FACULTY DEBATE PRIZE(MAIDEN EDITION

The Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University has emerged as the winner in Yinka Odumakin’s inter-faculty debate. The 2-day event kickstarted on the 2nd of April, 2024 with inter-faculty debate on the topic, “Nation Building: Should an Activist Consider a Role in Politics or Not?”, and was concluded today, the 3rd of April, 2024 with a public lecture themed “The Role of Unionism and Activism in Nation Building.”

Among other faculties, the Faculty of Law emerged first, followed by the Faculty of Agriculture, while the Faculty of Arts emerged third. The team went home with a sum of #200,000, #100,000 and #50,000 respectively.

Among some dignitaries present at the events were Dr Joe Odumakin (the president of Oluyinka Odumakin Foundation), Mr Olumide Adeyinka(SAN), Prof. Wumi Raji from the Department of Dramatic Arts, Edmund Obilo (a renowned broadcaster and political scientist), Mr Debo Oladinni (the senior legal adviser to the attorney general of Osun State) amongst other notable persons.

The wife of the late comrade Yinka Odumakin, Mrs Joe Odumakin took the floor to give an account of her husband’s life and time. She highlighted some qualities of the late comrade. According to her, “He was a man of deep conviction, very principled, very committed and always punctual.”

She mentioned that the late Comrade Yinka Odumakin was always being referred to as “the encyclopaedia of positive activism” and reiterated that “the only befitting memorial we can give him is to imbibe the virtues he lived and died for.”

The book launch event commenced with an opening prayer led by Isaiah Adepoju. Thereafter, the chief compere introduced some of the special guests, including Kehinde Agunbiade and Adio Favour Oladimeji, the President of NASELS, OAU Chapter. The event featured captivating performances, starting with a spoken word poetry presentation by Marcel, inspired by Hebrews 11:1. DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH HOLDS COLLOQUIUM FOR ITS FRESH STUDENTS

Still in the spirit of felicitation, as the matriculation ceremony took place on the 11th of January 2024, the Department of English held a colloquium for its fresh students on the 12th of January 2024 at AUD II. The anchor, Dr Olusegun Joseph commenced officially by 10:38 am. He recognised the presence of notable members of staff and ushered a number of them to the high table including Prof E.T.O Babalola, the current HOD of the Department of English Prof Akande, Prof Rotimi Taiwo, Dr Faleye, Dr Bamigbade, Dr Adejumo, Dr (Mrs) Hunsu, Dr Ogundipe, Dr Ademilokun, Acting Chief Security Officer of the university, Mr Adegboyega and some other members of staff of the department.
