I HAVE ALL THE GOOD CHARACTERISTICS

NCB: Good evening. Can we meet you?

FYB: My name is Akpom Chinwekene Faith. I have all the good characteristics you can think of (beautiful, intelligent, hardworking, fun and the like). I’m the third of six children, hail from the East, Anambra to be precise but born and bred in Lagos.

NCB: I love your confidence. Igbo but bred in Lagos, are you multilingual?

FYB: Lol. Thank you. Am I multilingual? Yes, actually I am.

NCB: How many and what languages do you speak?

FYB: I speak my indigenous language, Igbo. I also speak English, Yoruba, Pidgin and a fikkle likkle bit of French.

NCB: What influenced your coming to the Department of English at OAU

FYB: It was never my first option, to be quite honest. I could say it was influenced divinely.

NCB: Do you mind telling us the story?

FYB: Well, I wrote Jamb twice for Law; it got discredited in the same sequence. I was still headstrong and applied for Direct Entry, hoping it would be accredited by the time I was done. But alas, I settled for English when the time came.

NCB: Would you say you are happy being a student of this department?

FYB: Yes, I am actually happy being a student of the English language. There was a time I would have revoked that question. But it has been enlightening being here, so much in ways I cannot fully describe.

NCB: As a student, are you involved in any extracurriculars?

FYB: My extracurriculars will be sports; I play lawn tennis in my free time, also I write short stories and poems sparingly and have a leg in the tech field.

NCB: Would you say you are a professional at tennis?

FYB: No, I would not say so. There’s hardly anyone that could say so, I guess.

NCB: Hm, what aspect of tech are you into?

FYB: App and Website design.

NCB: Wow, a bonafide tech sis. Do you plan on sticking to tech?

FYB: At this point, I believe there is a whole lot I could do and be. Circumstances would fit me into where I need to be. I only need to be fully ready to excel whenever I am directed divinely.

NCB: Hm, with these activities, what do you like to do for fun?

FYB: Lol… not so much, really. I read novels, a lot of them.

NCB: Romantic?

FYB: I enjoy all genres absolutely but surprisingly, I least prefer romance. Give me thrillers, suspense, paranormal, mystery, fantasy and the likes, any day, anytime

NCB: So you’re not romantic? Does this mean you are single?

FYB: Touché…lol, quite astute of you. Yes, I am single.

NCB: Proudly or searching?

FYB: No o, not proudly. I’m searching and waiting too.

NCB: Would you say you are searching for Mr. Right? If so, what does he look like to you?

FYB: I would say I am just searching for MY person. I can’t pinpoint what he looks like but I can surely tell you one thing – he is definitely hard to come by.

NCB: Okay. So on the week’s opinion poll, we had the question “Describe your spec in three celebrities”, do you mind doing this for us?

FYB: That’s a nice poll idea. Timini Egbuson, Chike –the artiste and Burna Boy.

NCB: What a nice combination, I hope he is all you need him to be.

FYB: Amen, I hope so too.

NCB: What would you say your favourite memory on campus is?

FYB: Hmm… favourite memory, that’s a tough one. I really can’t select any, I have a lot of pleasant memories on campus.

NCB: What would you say your top two are?

FYB: I have just one at the top of my head right now, maybe because it’s fairly recent. Last semester, my friends and I had an exciting time daring death on the roof of social sciences building. Now, don’t ask me about details, you and your friends could go there too if you want to know more… LOL

NCB: Lol! I’m glad you had fun! What do advice do you have for your junior colleagues?

FYB: Guys, try to always be yourself; say your ‘Nos’ and your ‘Yes’, that’s the best way to have no regrets.

NCB: Thank you so much for joining us tonight.

FYB: You are welcome.

*Can we meet you?* •I am Adéwùmí Zainab Atóyèbí. I recently graduated from the Department of English with a First Class degree (Honours)and the privilege of being the best graduating student of the department. *How do you feel bagging first-class degree in the Department of English since the last time it was recorded?* • I feel very joyful and grateful to God who enabled me and gave me the privilege to have achieved such a feat. While I was diligent with my studies, it is entirely by the grace and favour of God that I graduated well, and I am sincerely grateful for it. *What challenges did you encounter?* • The Department of English is undeniably challenging on its own, especially considering its past records.
