NCB: Can we meet you?

Big Blessing Cakes: I am Oyewole Barakat, the Creative Director of Big Blessing Cakes, and a part 4 student in the Department of English Language, OAU. I am the third of five children.

NCB: What inspired you to create your brand?

Big Blessing Cakes: Well, I am just a lover of creativity. I love being creative and being productive as well. Seeing the glamour and creativity of event halls lured me into learning event decoration. On getting there, my interest in cakes developed when I knew I could do different things. So, I would say that being creative inspired me.

NCB: Looking at your interest in event planning, does it mean BIG BLESSING CAKES does more than baking and catering?

Big Blessing Cakes: I would say yes, but I focus more on cakes.

NCB: If you had a bigger opportunity in event planning, would you leave baking?

Big Blessing Cakes: (Smiles) I don’t think I can leave baking completely because it has now become one big part of me and I would say baking gives me joy, especially decorating it.

NCB: For how long have you been an entrepreneur?

Big Blessing Cakes: Being an entrepreneur? I have been an entrepreneur since 2018 and that’s 5 years now.

NCB: Oh, that’s been a while. Since you have been an entrepreneur, what are the up and down you have faced in this profession?

Big Blessing Cakes: To be honest with you, no work is either easy or too hard either if you love what you do. Having bulk orders could be tough at times because I wouldn’t sleep all through the night to deliver fresh goods, but delivering them to meet beautiful reviews does bring back the energy. Easy? (Lol) Maybe Plate Cakes sha. 

NCB: You mean Plate Cakes are easy?

Big Blessing Cakes: Plate Cakes are small cakes so just baking those to serve people’s cravings is somehow easier compared to others.

NCB: As an entrepreneur and a student, how have you been able to cope with academic?

Big Blessing Cakes: Omorr! Coping isn’t that easy. I would have said planning and knowing your priorities but there were so many times when planning failed me especially when I had urgent orders and I didn’t want to chase off customers. However, knowing my primary assignment on Campus has helped me so far and with the help of good and supportive friends and roommates. I can say that I am lucky enough to have good friends and roommates around me.

NCB: Hmm…That’s remarkable. Do you think you are at your best so far or you can do better considering how long you’ve been in this?

Big Blessing Cakes: Well, I’ll say that I am at my best with the services I render to people. Trust me, I don’t mind wasting the baked items if I don’t find them worthy of selling out. But in the baking industry, I am looking forward to learning more from bosses. That is one of my plans after school. I still need to broaden my horizons of knowledge and trust me, no one is an island of knowledge. We learn more every day.

NCB: If you had a chance to explore another opportunity, what would it be?

Big Blessing Cakes: That would be journalism.

NCB: Beautiful. How long did it take you to start making a profit off your business?

Big Blessing Cakes: Let me say after 2 years. That was due to a lack of capital to start big and I was investing the meagre profit back into the business to learn more and also buy some instruments needed.

NCB: Alright! How lucrative is your business? What advice would you give an intending caterer (baker)?

Big Blessing Cakes: Very lucrative. I know that people are joining daily but this is not a get-rich-quick business. If you are planning to join this business with the hope of getting rich the following month, then it is not for you. Intending bakers should know that they can always start from somewhere and they’ll continue to see the reward. They should also learn from the best and most knowledgeable bosses, and with that, they’ll be close to their goals.

NCB: Where do you see your brand in five years?

Big Blessing Cakes: I see my brand having its cake shop and cake studio, teaching young entrepreneurs who want to be better with their baking skills and saving people from the stress of looking for professionals because I will build BIG BLESSING CAKES to be one.

NCB: What would be your advice to students who are also brand owners like yourself, ma’am?

Big Blessing Cakes: They should not be carried away by business alone but they should learn how to balance business and studying as a student on campus. Although the two can’t be balanced, but can be close. They should know their onions.

NCB: Awesomely acknowledged, ma’am. We’d take it out to all OAU students and entrepreneurs. Thank you for the wonderful session we had with you tonight. We appreciate it.

Big Blessing Cakes: It is my pleasure. Thanks so much for having me.
