PRESIDENT ADDRESSES COURSE REGISTRATION, STUDENT WELFARE AT PART ONE ASSEMBLY

By: Oki-Olubunmi Damilola

A general meeting with Part One students was held on Monday, 9th February, 2026, at AUD II with the President of the National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies (NASELS). The meeting was held to address several academic and welfare-related concerns affecting the class.

In his opening remarks, the President explained that students were asked to submit copies of their course forms to ensure proper documentation of registered courses and to prevent unforeseen complications in the future. He also disclosed that the President of the Linguistics Department had contacted him regarding a first-year English student who was reportedly struggling emotionally. He used the moment to encourage students to show empathy and support to colleagues facing financial or personal challenges, particularly those experiencing difficulties with school fees.

The meeting also addressed complaints raised by Part One students about their class representatives. Students were given the opportunity to speak, and three individuals shared their concerns. The first student criticized the dissemination of unverified information on the class WhatsApp group, the alleged addition of extra charges to course manuals, and what was described as a lack of politeness from some representatives. Another student expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the Assistant Course Representative communicated with members of the class. The President responded to these concerns and assured students that the issues would be properly addressed.

In contrast, one student commended the class representatives for their efforts and suggested that important announcements be posted strictly in the designated information group rather than in the general discussion group. The President supported this recommendation and advised class representatives to use the official community announcement platform for important notices. He also stated that he had already spoken with the representatives about maintaining professionalism and addressing students respectfully.

The President further reminded students of a directive from the Head of Department prohibiting loitering on the topmost floor of the department building. He explained the reasons behind the rule and emphasized the importance of compliance. Students were also informed that any grievances could be formally presented to the Judicial Council.

The Chief Judge subsequently addressed the gathering, outlining the responsibilities of the Judicial Council and encouraging students to report any form of misconduct or grievance to him or other council members. He reiterated departmental regulations, including the prohibition of sitting on pavements and walls, the use of vulgar language, and any form of disrespect toward senior students or coursemates. He also advised class representatives on strategies to prevent conflicts within the class.

The meeting concluded with the President commending the Part One students for their various achievements. The distribution of receipts and souvenirs followed, bringing the meeting to a close.

"I WOULD HATE TO MAKE PROMISES BECAUSE THEN I WOULD BE CHALLENGED TO PERFORM ABOVE THEM." - FRANCIS OHACHO, PRESIDENT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH, OAU.

By Mercy Ojegbola  NCB: Can we meet you? Francis: I am Francis Fortunatus Ohacho, popularly known as Sael. A part four student in the Department of English, Obafemi Awolowo University, I am the incumbent president of the department's students body. NCB: What motivated you to run for the position of President? Francis: I would like to use cliché pumped up phrases like I'm led by my passion for service and all.  People often say they knew I was going for presidency from part one due to my proactiveness, but really I didn't have the Presidency in mind till late second semester of part two.  And that's because I have only wanted to support from the sides, being a significant catalyst for development wherever I am. So I've had roles like Vice President and Fin Sec in mind, but not president. I didn't think I had it. My motivation, in summary, would be the realisation of how efficient I can be to an administration. And I don't doubt it, that with the help of the t...
