DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH HOLDS FRESHERS' COLLOQUIUM, URGES STUDENTS TO EMBRACE DISCIPLINE AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
The Department of English welcomed its new intakes on Wednesday, November 27th, with an insightful and engaging colloquium. The session featured interactive sessions from distinguished lecturers in the department on academic, social, and spiritual development.
The event opened with the National Anthem and Great Ife Anthem, followed by the introduction of special guests, including Prof. Folasade Hunsu, Prof. Ademilokun, Dr. Anthony Adejuwon, and Prof. Moji Olateju.
Representing the Head of Department, Prof. Ademilokun congratulated the freshers on their admission into the department, which is the largest Department of English in the country with 45 lecturers and 19 full professors. He highlighted that even though the humanities are often relegated in the society, "There is nothing you can not become’ by studying English. He encouraged the freshmen to attend classes regularly, ask questions, build good relationships with lecturers, and maintain discipline.
Prof. Moji Olateju built on this in her keynote titled ‘Building Healthy Relationships on Campus’, urging students to stay away from loafers, lazy students, non-students, and people who advise them not to attend lectures. She also warned the freshmen not to listen to rumors about courses from staylites hook, line, and sinker. In her words, 'No course is designed for anybody to fail.’
Prof. Folasade Hunsu talked about ‘Healthy Reading Habits’, advising students to read daily, take notes in class, rest well, avoid drugs, and maintain balance academically, socially, and spiritually.
Dr. Anthony Adejuwon warned against cultism and guided students on understanding course units, electives, and CGPA calculations.
Speaking to the freshers at the event, Ganiyu Aishat said, ‘I learned a lot of things about how I will live comfortably on campus and on how I can succeed in my academics. I would have regretted it if I could not make it to the colloquium today.’
Amos Busayo remarked that she enjoyed the colloquium, saying: ‘More than I was expecting came up. It was refreshing nice and taught me how to live my life in this new journey. Educative and taught me how to study well.’
Overall, the colloquium provided freshers with essential guidance on how to navigate campus life.
