I CAN’T REALLY RELATE TO THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WAHALA…

NCB: Welcome and good evening.

FYB: Good evening, ma.

NCB: It’s good to have you here.

FYB: Same here

NCB: Can we meet you?

FYB: Alright. My name is Adebisi Adeyewa David, a final-year student of English Language. I’m also a contemporary art

NCB: Contemporary artist… I guess I’m coming back to that. Can you tell us about your background?

FYB: I’m from Ode-omu, Osun State, but I grew up here in Ife and had my education in Ife. My primary school was at OAU staff school, I finished my secondary education at OAU International School and here we are, final year at Obafemi Awolowo University. My childhood was fun, I can say that because of the meaningful friends I had, and the kind of experience I had as a child.

NCB: What was childhood like for you? Indoor kid or…

FYB: No. I wasn’t an indoor kid, I did go out and played with friends

NCB: Ohhh nice, you said earlier that you grew up in Ife, why did you still decide to go to school in an area where you grew up?

FYB: Because of OAU. If OAU was not in IFE I wouldn’t be schooling here… There are only two universities in Nigeria, OAU and others.

NCB: What’s so Special about OAU to you though, what interests you about Great Ife?

FYB: OAU has a long history of producing great and prominent people in society. You should know this… The quality of education OAU provides is what interests me.

NCB: How is OAU so far?

FYB: We thank God, so far it has been God.

NCB: Alright .You said you’re a contemporary artist, can you be more specific?

FYB: Yes. I make artworks… African traditional art.

NCB.: Are you looking forward to going into that full time, or what’s next after B. Sc

FYB: That’s personal

NCB: What are your career goals then?

FYB: Just want to be the best in whatever field I am in and make the most of any given opportunity.

NCB: Hmm, striving to be good or to be the best in a field can be stressful, how do you manage stress?

FYB: Interesting question… I don’t get stressed actually, because once there is a goal, I do whatever it takes to achieve it.

NCB: Are you saying that you don’t get stressed even with the OAU and Department of English “wahala”?

FYB: Not at all. I believe in going, moving forward, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. I can’t really relate to the English department wahala… sorry to say.

NCB: What are your best and worst courses so far?

FYB: Worst course is actually anything that has to do with English sounds and phonetics… transcribing words to sounds… Best course… EGL 307

NCB: With your experience on campus and beyond, what is your view on this popular trend “school na scam”?

FYB: Well it’s relative, depends on people’s perspective…. From mine “School no be scam.” There are so many opportunities and beyond what education offers, you just have to be well informed. School is not just about books and degrees, along the way you learn and make meaningful connections that help your journey in life. So School no be scam.

NCB: What do you do for fun?

FYB: Movies. I watch movies a lot. I also paint during the break and I play video games

NCB: Are you in a relationship?

FYB: Yes I am

NCB: Nice. Somebody from the department?

FYB: Yes. She is in English literature

NCB: Oh wao. Are you by any chance a wounded lawyer?

FYB: Not at all

NCB: Tell us about your worst or most memorable moment on campus.

FYB: Memorable moments will be time spent with friends… No worst moment so far.

NCB: You talked about being an artist the other time, then you must be a lover of art. What motivated you to become an artist?

FYB: My Dad actually motivated me… He noticed I liked to draw and decided to help me improve on my talent. So I went to train under a master, who taught me all I know about art. That’s how I became an artist.

NCB: What advice would you give to Freshers?

FYB: Know what you are doing and stay focused

NCB: Thank you very much for your time. Do you have any shoutouts?

FYB: Shout out to Jiggy Kings!!!

NCB: We have come to the end of this session. Thank you very much Mr Adebisi Adeyewa David.⁩

FYB: Thank you for having me

*Can we meet you?* •I am Adéwùmí Zainab Atóyèbí. I recently graduated from the Department of English with a First Class degree (Honours)and the privilege of being the best graduating student of the department. *How do you feel bagging first-class degree in the Department of English since the last time it was recorded?* • I feel very joyful and grateful to God who enabled me and gave me the privilege to have achieved such a feat. While I was diligent with my studies, it is entirely by the grace and favour of God that I graduated well, and I am sincerely grateful for it. *What challenges did you encounter?* • The Department of English is undeniably challenging on its own, especially considering its past records. Personally, I faced health, accomodation and financial challenges, as well as the disappointment of having grades below my expectations. Every of such situations, especially when I first had C's in 300 level, was so discouraging and demoralising, but upon all that, I still g...
